The Rotterdam Sailing ship Foundation

This was my very first UX-intern projects and also a very long running one at that. During this project I got taught a lot about the use of Figma, modernizing an old website and presenting a design.

It was also a big challenge for a beginner like me to work on a project such as this one, because it gave me a ton of freedom regarding design choices, which means a lot of responsibility.

Website Redesign

The Why

The original website was fairly simple. It got maintained once in a while to add new information or reports, but nothing more than that was being done. De sole purpose of the website was to provide essential information for investors, banks or other government instances that fund the foundation or have ties to its existence.

As an intern who is just starting out on experiencing the actual working environment, I got the challenge to redesign the website and give it a more modern twist that keeps up with today’s website trends.

For who

The community and majority of their sponsors are elderly people who often hang out at the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam. As the foundation depends on donations and sponsorships, it is important that the website is accessible. Strong contrast, texts have to have a big enough and readable font and the navigation in general has to be intentional and clear for the user.

The concepts

I have gone through many possible versions of the landing page. I have tried a lot of different styling elements, compositions, orders and so on until it got thrown into a completely different direction with some extra pair of eyes from one of the designers at my internship. It gave me a whole new perspective on redesigning and how it’s not always about staying within boundaries that you’ve created for yourself, because you will only get more stuck in it.

What i learned

I was not all too familiar with Figma, when it came to teamprojects, I got the research and testing roles or I made a physical prototype which did not require the use of Figma. This was quite the challenge as I only knew the basics of Figma back then. Thankfully I got great guidance from professional designers at my internship, who helped me a lot and taught me to not create boundaries for myself, or else I will stay stuck if I don’t ask for feedback on time. It also taught me to spend time on planning the entire process beforehand to avoid missing important research moments or improvements.
